There's nothing like the fresh smell of sea air, though that hasn't stopped the National Trust trying to recreate it on the South Bank of the Thames. Step inside a giant shell to be enveloped by evocative wafts of salty air, the sounds of waves and seagulls (though we have our share of those on the river), and mood lighting designed to encourage you to make good on your dreams of a seaside jaunt. An NT survey suggests one in five of us entertain escaping to the coast yet the number who actually make the trip has dropped by 20 per cent in the past decade, something which the organisation hopes to remedy.
