Bluntly municipal places like City Halls can often stir up surprisingly strong emotions. They’re the sites of birth certificates and marriages and registries of death. Accordingly, they’re full of memories, both good and bad. This observational documentary recording the comings and goings in Belfast City Hall (it was first shown on BBC Northern Ireland) taps into these resonant moments.
On the basis of the few online clips we were able to view, this looks both fascinating and touching. A woman describes the early stages of her relationship with her intended. A quiet, reserved man talks falteringly about love. A man registers the death of his father. These moments are the stuff of life – this could be a film of gentle revelation.
