The Horrors performing at the Shacklewell Arms
The bjoux live back room still smells bizarrely of mould and the courtyard smoking area - complete with broken fountain and faded, crudely painted murals - might nix its chances of a Michelin star for music venues, but this down-at-heels gem is already an institution, just two years after throwing open its doors to a rampantly eclectic live music programme. The Shacklewell is usually crowded, but generally convivial, welcoming a hipster-ish crowd to gigs seven nights a week, plus club nights, magazine launches and after-show parties, all benefitting from a late licence. The studio next door ensures the patronage of a stream of local musicians and industry ace faces. Somewhat unbelievably, the galmorous Solange Knowles fetched up to play a DJ set here in 2011.

Great venue/pub. But definitely not suited to the typical fuddy-duddy Time Out readers.

if i see this venue advertised on the ticket... i ain't going to the gig, bout sums up how much i like this place...
This place has some of the worst organisation I have ever seen: Despite buying a ticket & queuing for well over half an hour we were met with angry and clearly frustrated door staff. A man pushed in the que and started a fight with someone, they let him in. the staff were overworked and unhelpful: Even politely asking where the toilet was was met with rudeness. I would avoid this pub if you are looking for a safe and enjoyable evening out.
