XOYO - © Marc de Groot
A truly taste-making team is behind Shoreditch's XOYO. John 'Johnno' Burgess (who runs Bugged Out!), acid house scene innovator Cymon Eckel, founder of Field Day Marcus Weedon and head of Eat Your Own Ears Tom Baker clubbed together in 2010 to set up the 800-capacity venue. The Victorian warehouse-style space now offers the sort of effortlessly cool programming you might expect from a club with such credentials, and nights are eclectic and inclusive. Billed as a club-cum-event space, XOYO lays on parties and gigs in the high-ceiling dance basement, as well as exhibitions in a stark white gallery-like room upstairs. The downstairs venue isn't the optimum shape for live shows and there's always a scrum at the two tiny bard areas, but somehow the jam adds to the feeling of an event.

What is 'following'?Great venue! I would personally recommend this place to any of my friends: Amazing music and always a great ambiance. And let's not forget the gallery space with their exhibitions...
Great club, great music, great sound system! Always fun for club nights and so many good gigs as well!
Was there for The Let Them Eat Cake private view last Feb. Was incredibly packed.
Impressed by what xoyo can provide and support emergent artists.
Really looking forward for their forthcoming exhibitions and gigs.
Besides, I was lucky to meet the hot curator, she's a doll.
I was really worried about going to this place after reading the reviews below, not really sure what they are all going on about, so felt compelled to put a review on here in case anyone else is put off. The doorman were in fact incredibly polite for doorman, this applied throughout the staff working there, there was no queues, in fact contrary to what some reviews say below i was actually too cold as the air con was on too much, even through the dance floor was packed. Its not the best club in the world to be honest, but its not awful either. but thought id put my thoughts on here seeing as it seemed to be so slagged off below! its just a standard club really! got served at the bar really quick too, always a bonus.
is this place really as bad now as the comments appear to make it ?
going to a boys own do on the 5th November and it could really ruin it in many
ways if the comments reflect the truth been going out now for over 20 years
and aggressive bouncers / queues / random searches and heat are all a total
no no when enjoing a night out ???
really am amazed by peoples comments on this venue, just saw a gig there and was very impressed. though it was slighty hot it was all forgivable just for the simple opportunity to be able to see a band in the intimate setting that xoyo can provide. staff were as you would expect at anywhere in london and the ambiance when the band started playing was great, would without doubt reccomend this venue to anyone looking for a way to connect with a band in a environment that is hard to come by
Worst door staff in the world. I was standing underneath an overhang down on the corner to get out of the rain to be told by the gold tooth gutless wonder door staff not to stand there as he grabs my arm to move me. I told him not to touch me. Then he told me he was going to kick my white ass down the street. I told him he would lose his door license. Then he told me he would get the police to remove me. I told him call the police, because I would have him arrested for assault and racist slurs. When he realized I was not going to back down from his thuggery he just made dumb comments and left.
Be careful when you go to this place. Super agressive bouncers, especially around clearing out time. Could easily get out of hand.
XOYO? Basically - it's awsome! Location wise it couldn't get any better - literally by Old Street tube - sweet! The variety of music being played is more vibrant and eclectic for both live and clubs than any other venue in London and it's always the first listing I check. Went and saw a gig the other day and the atmosphere was top. Drinks were not over priced - if you think so I don't know where you've been hanging out as it's the same as all over Shoreditch. To be fair I know the place has been seriously hot recently but the breeze was coming in steadily last week. Friendly staff and security even on a road block night I went to that had 2manydjs playing where a lesser venue would have had problems with the crowds. This is a great venue and will definitely keep it as one of my favourit places in London. Nuff said.
Only giving one star as not allowed to give it no stars. In all the years I have been going to gigs, this is probably the worst ever venue. Sound was awful. No air, ventilation system not working. Impossible to see the band. Loos disgusting with missing doors, blocked toilets. Bars too small. Over-priced. It was like being in a sauna listening to music on your next door neighbour's transistor radio. At least the staff are nice !
xoyo is officially the WORST place to go! The amount of arrogance at the doors is unbelievable! The bouncers run the show, thinking they know who is who, and let in only the ones they like. The club needs to review its door policy.
The worst club I have ever been to! STAY AWAY! Horrible staff. Anyone who says this place is exclusive is kidding themselves. DONT SAY YOU WERENT WARNED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic venue, I can't understand why it gets these negative reviews, fair enough it may have had some problems when it first opened, but I don't think your going to find a better venue in London that has a fantastic mix of live and clubbing events with the cities best promoters, been there several times and it's always been great! Seriously recommend XOYO to anybody who loves great music and atmosphere!
As a promoter, I looked into hiring this place for a gig (very high hire fee of £1000) and agree with negative reviews; great location, terrible everything else. Also, the soundsystem is awful, very low level sound levels. This place has some potential but at the moment it's just hype.
Shit club overpriced, , rude door staff and bad music! This must be the worst club I have ever been to in my entire life! There's people on the street hassling you, trying to drag you in the club. Why the council haven't shut this place down I do not know.Smells awfully terrible in there.Door staff are so rude!!!!!!!!
xoyo is in a great location, right by old street stationa nd close to shoreditch etc.
however this is where the positives end. this is quite simply the worst club i have ever had the misfortune of visiting, it is so flawed it beggars belief! ive been there twice and both times it was wholly unpleasant for many reasons.
the layout is beyond a joke, everything funnels into one narrow short corridor leading to chaos throughout the night. the smoking area accomodates approximately 25 people, this in a club with a capacity of 800! the soundsytem is poor (think the sort of sound you would get at a walkabout pub), the bars are pretty crap, and there is absolutely no decor at all. the 'lighting' stretches to a measly and pathetic looking 6 school disco style lights above the dj booth.
i really cannot think of one good thing to say about this venue, i find it absolutely incredible how the team behind this venture could make such a hash of the project- hang your heads in shame.
XOYO great venue but needs work, enjoyed my night was really packed but the security and staff where helpful and polite you could see they handle the whole crowed situation very well i give the a hands up as its not there fault, the female security has been the best iv meet yet very stern and polite at the same time and dose her job well, shame about the smoking area would be nice if it was bigger. overall i'd go back.
All the comments on here seem to be so negitive but i always have a great time at XOYO. Yes when they first opened there were some teething problems but all new clubs have to change things around after they see how the venue works with people inside.
Ive been to see Live gigs there and been to see the DJ's at weekends and the sound is always fantastic.
All of the staff seemed really freindly and the security were some of the nicest ive ever met.
Cant wait to go back to XOYO
This is one of the worst venues I've been to in London. The whole place feels like an office block that has had some toilets and a couple of stages / bars quickly thrown together. There is no where that you can chat to your friends without shouting other than the tiny smoking area. And the disco bloodbath night we went to, everyone suddenly decided it was time to leave at 2am and a massive queue was formed for the main cloakroom that extended all the way downstairs. From the back to the front took 35mins! Awful way to end an awful night which is a shame as the DJs onboard should have been quality. Avoid this place!!
This is the worst venue I have ever been to in London - EVER. And all I do is go to gigs! I will not go to anymore gigs here is is so bad!
One of the worst venues in the city, in fact probably the very worst in terms of the ratio of venue quality to act quality. Firstly, the layout is terrible - the stage is located immediately next to the (lone) entryway, meaning that as people filter in they end up at the front of the crowd rather than the back, and then just stay there, resulting in a room that's jam packed in some sections and empty in others. The shape of the thing's all messed up as well - a long rectangle with a narrow stage pushed nearly to a corner, leaving large portions of the room with only a steeply angled sidelong view of the stage. Then there's the inexplicable location of the bars - facing the stage so that the crowd eyeing the gig ends up backing up against the crowd eyeing the booze. There's so much dead space to either side of the room, why they couldn't work out a way to put the bars there is a mystery to me. The ventilation system is about as effective as a dead asthmatic, and the flimsy ducts rattle something awful during loud gigs, as well. Why aren't there any vents located directly above the densest portions of the crowd? The mind boggles. And if the heat gets to you and you'd like some fresh air, you need to make your way up to the minuscule smoking area, except it's so tiny - i've seen bigger bathrooms - that it's invariably rammed with smokers standing nose-to-armpit and puffing away. So then you think, alright, they've given me this nice XOYO stamp on my hand, why don't I just go out the main door for a bit and come back in? Except no, get to the front door and you find that there's a strict no readmissions policy (so why the stamp?) being doggedly enforced by a bouncer with the IQ of a used postage stamp. Then, when the gig's is over, do they open up an extra exit to help disperse the crowd quickly? Nope... it's more of their charming staff telling you that there's only one way out. I can only hope promoters will see sense and scratch this place off their schedules posthaste - unlikely, considering the people behind it. I hate when this kind of crap is accepted just because it's trendy. I don't care if a venue's corporate and unfashionable, it can be sponsored by Asda for all I care, as long as it doesn't suck donkey danglers the way XOYO does.
Really shoddy venue. I could hear the band on downstairs over the band I'd come to see upstairs. Venue was insanely hot, but air conditioner was too noisy to have on during the gig. Bar staff tried to charge for 2 cokes when they used one bottle to pour into 2 cups. Had to point out that I wouldn't pay £6 for one coke. Real shame because it looks nice inside and is in a really great location.
Was not impressed by being short-changed last night at the bar, the bar staff admitting their mistake but then refusing to give me my money back. Very bad attitude towards customers, and I certainly won't be going back.
Massive disappointment!
