Opened in 1900 as a music hall, KOKO has been through more name changes than Prince and P Diddy put together. First it was the Camden Theatre, becoming the Camden Hippodrome in 1909, where the likes of Charlie Chaplin first plied their trade. In 1913 it was transformed into a cinema and finally, after surviving World War II relatively intact, it became a live music venue in 1972 called the Music Machine. It played a huge role in London's rock landscape hosting concerts by the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Madness and was the stage for Madonna's first ever London appearance. The name changed again in 1982 when it was bought by Visage frontman Steve Strange who christened it the Camden Palace, possibly referencing the ornate baroque interior which had endured down the decades. The heavy indie-gig programme was offset by more dance-based events in the '90s and partygoers continued to flock through its doors until it closed for redevelopment in 2004. Renamed once again as KOKO it's now a state-of-the-art modern space with a sparkling programme of everything from pop gigs to cabaret nights and hip club nights.
