Bílkova vila review Rate it

Down the hill on the opposite side of Prague Castle, to the north, this building must be the only one in the world designed to look like a wheat field. Built in 1911-12 by mystic sculptor František Bílek as his studio and home, it still contains much of his work. Bílek went to Paris to study as a painter, but discovered that he was partially colourblind and thereafter turned to sculpture and illustration; the wheat field, representing spiritual fertility and the harvest of creative work, was one of his many motifs. His work ranges from the sublime to the repellent, but if the grouping of Hobbit-like wooden figures out front takes your fancy, you should have a look inside.
