On special effects (SFX) makeup

SFX is effects that are out of the norm. There’s a lot of creature and character design. We have to design beasts, half-human and half-animal creatures, aliens – that sort, lah.

When you’re doing beauty makeup, you have to cover flaws. Get rid of eyebags, eyeliner has to be perfect, lips carefully lined. But in SFX, we play up the flaws. If the person has eyebags, we make them worse!

On Halloween Horror Nights

This year, we have a zone called 'conTERMINATED'. [The producers] were playing up real-life events like nuclear and biochemical warfare – how do people suffer their after – effects? So you get deformed people, animals and babies, half of their faces melted off, some with one arm longer than the other.

On researching fear

We looked at actual warfare, like in the US and Japan, for inspiration – and it’s quite disturbing, actually. We always try to reference real-life events because it lends realism, but of course, we exaggerate it.

On her 'army'

Last year for Halloween, I hired about 100 makeup artists. We have two hours to do the makeup for 400 scare actors. I’m not so friendly then [laughs]. You come behind the scenes, and it’s chaos!

On working beside ghouls

I’m quite okay here in the workroom among all these creatures. We give them names sometimes. I actually get more creeped out in the office, y’know.

Halloween Horror Nights 5 is at Universal Studios Singapore from Oct 2-31.
