Officially the Casa di Goldoni e Biblioteca di Studi Teatrali (Goldoni's House and Library of Theatre Studies), this museum is really for specialists, though the attractive Gothic courtyard, with its carved well-head and staircase, is worth seeing. It is the birthplace of Venice's greatest writer, the playwright Carlo Goldoni. Over the course of his career, he transformed Italian theatre, moving it away from the clichés of the Commedia dell'arte tradition and introducing a comedy based on realistic observation. On the first floor, there are reproductions of prints based on Goldoni's works and a few 18th-century paintings; however, the best item is a splendid 18th-century miniature theatre complete with puppets of Commedia dell'arte figures. The library on the upper floor has theatrical texts and original manuscripts.
