The original Indian restaurant in Austin, Clay Pit serves both classic and modern dishes (think mussels and shrimp alongside your goat-, lamb- and chicken-based dishes). Reserve a private room for a large party and make sure to visit during the weekly salsa dances in the upstairs space (odd but exciting location for salsa dances).

Food was good. Service okay. BUT don't eat downstairs and get a head injury like I did. WATCH OUT! They have too many tables close to low walls downstairs and don't seem to care that customers hurt themselves on the low ceilings. I was told by a manager that people have hurt their heads many times, yet the restaurant continues to seat people in unsafe seating areas. Seems money is more important than clients' well being.
