Best browsed with a large Originator smoothie in hand, Exploded Records inhabits a side room in the long-time Duval St institution JuiceLand. It began as an offshoot of the monthly left-field hip hop party Exploded Drawing, with party organizer Soundfounder holding court over the shop’s racks of beat-centric vinyl. Expect exhaustive discographies from labels like Stones Throw, Warp and Brainfeeder, as well plenty of soulful sample material. Don’t forget to check out the latest releases from the extended Exploded Drawing crew, which includes some of the city’s most up-and-coming producers.

Exploded Records has quickly made its way onto my list of top record shops in the Austin area. They have managed to fit a large, crazy diverse selection into such a small space. I find records that I have trouble finding at the larger stores like Milo, Aphex Twin and Madlib. They say they specialize in electronic/beat and experimental music, but their classic rock, Texas music, psych rock and jazz selections are top notch. Their staff is great too and have an excellent knowledge of current and past music.

The icing on the cake for me: Exploded Records has amazing in-store performances with heavy hitters and locals. Not to mention they have a section for Austin based musicians. My current favorite is Golden Dawn Arkestra, recommended to me by staff. Great work guys, keep it up
