USA, 1981, 35mm, 122 min

The title S.O.B. stands for “Standard Operating Bullshit,” as in the usual undercurrent of backstabbing, egomania and disloyalty that ran through Hollywood in Blake Edwards’ day, and probably still does. From his perch of newly renewed post-10 commercial success Edwards took a bitterly satirical stab at the heart of the beast in this over-the-top autobiographical black comedy. Richard Mulligan plays a director who, like Blake Edwards, was on top of the world until his first flop. Suddenly finding himself a pariah in Hollywood, he buys back the rights of the film and convinces his estranged wife and star (Julie Andrews) that she’ll receive no settlement money from their divorce if they can’t make the film a hit. So the musical is refilmed as a porn movie, with Andrews, whose very name is synonymous with family entertainment, appearing nude. Along the way, everything goes wrong. One of the most venomous Hollywood satires ever made, and also the Edwards film most ripe for a serious reappraisal.
