D. JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE, France, 1970, 35mm, 140min.

A Jean-Pierre Melville caper film, which is to say a movie that stands the whole concept of a caper film on its head and finds new levels of meaning, depth and cinematic expression in those familiar caper elements we have seen dozens of times. A motley bunch of dangerous men: superthief Alain Delon, escaped murderer Gian Maria Volonte, and mysterious former police sharpshooter Yves Montand come together to commit a jewel heist, it catalyzes a whole world of cops, mob bosses and underworld denizens. We observe them all, not just as pawns in a movie plot, but as living breathing creatures, with inner lives, who behave that way because their characters are such. A great masterpiece of crime cinema.

Part of the series:

In association with Drafthouse Films, AFS presents a series of some of the best French crime films of the '70s. This was the era of Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon, of souped up Citroens and quayside holdups in Marseilles. We are proud to present films from Jean-Pierre Melville (of course) and also his talented peers Claude Sautet and Henri Verneuil.

This series is presented in conjunction with Drafthouse Films to celebrate the release of THE CONNECTION.
