Time Out says

What do you know about AUSTIN Black History? What do your children and grandchildren know about AUSTIN Black History? Most of us think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, W.E.B. Du Bois, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, George Washington Carver, Harriet Wilson and others as the only note worthy African Americans during Black History Month. But, what about those who impacted the city in which we live today? The W.H. Passon House (Historical Society) located at 1501 E. 12th Street in Austin, Texas holds years of Austin Black History. Its furnishings, decorated walls that contain the rich history of Black Austin, is often passed by without acknowledgement. R.O.S.E.S Founder, Rose Smith, was inspired the moment she walked into the building, and YOU will be to. So, she is challenging the black people (young and not as young) of Austin and surrounding areas to learn more about the legacy of Black Austin. In honor of Black History Month, R.O.S.E.S is inviting you to the 1st Black History Scavenger Hunt in Austin, Texas!! Get a TEAM of 5 people (at least 3 team members must be 17 years of age or younger), and come down to the "Passon House" to ! Each team will be given a card with 5 questions, and will be allotted 10 minutes to enter the historical home, and find the answers. Since your team is up against the clock, having a strategy is important. The WINNING TEAM will be declared by having all answers correct in the least amount of time. Cell phones and other electronic devices will not be permitted inside the building with the competing teams. In the event of a tie, each team will be given a Austin Black History question to be answered in 2 minutes. We are accepting the first 10 Teams to respond by Facebook or to email to rosesclub2010@yahoo.com. Every member of the WINNING TEAM will receive a $25 Gift Certificate from Hoover's Restaurant, which is owned and operated by one of Austin's most successful entrepreneurs and community activist, Hoover Alexander. There will also be a Silent Auction held on the grounds, and we are asking 50 Black Business Owners to donate an item to be auctioned. This is a great way to promote your business, gain new customers and launch your products and services. The silent auction bidding will end at 5:30pm. All funds raised from the Silent Auction will go towards the expense to host R.O.S.E.S 3rd ANNUAL DESIRE TO INSPIRE WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT BRUNCH - SXSW ALTERNATIVE EVENT. If you are a business owner, and would like to donate an item, please inbox Rose Smith asap. Everyone is welcome to attend, even if you do not participate in the Scavenger Hunt. So, spend your Sunday afternoon learning more about the Black History of Austin and sharing it with those around you. The Passon House will also be open for tours, and there will be refreshments for all who attend. Come out and bring your family, youth groups, organizations, church members and co-workers. Hope to see you there!!
