Austin ABC, with your help, will be creating a zine for and by trans & queer prisoners in Texas who are in solitary confinement. The zine will be a collection of artwork, essays, poems and related works to highlight the struggles and passions of those stolen from us by the state. We have a list of over 50 queer and trans prisoners in Texas who are in solitary confinement, most of whom do not currently have penpals.
January 22 will be the first internationally recognized day of solidarity with queer and trans prisoners. Organizers from around the world are working on unique projects to educate, bring awareness, and build solidarity. Along with this zine, ABC will be hosting a series of events and an action to coincide with this special day.
This Wednesday night we will be sending out a call for submissions for the zine. We will have a template you can go off, but we encourage you to take this opportunity to build a friendship with someone too. We will go over the basic guidelines of writing to someone in prison, and we are happy to answer any questions you might have.
This is a collective effort, where everyone is encouraged to bring their own skillsets to the table. We will certainly need help from folks who want to contribute in other ways. In the last meeting, we decided that forming small working committees could be useful such as design, layout, printing, distribution, etc.
The next 2 Wednesdays will be devoted to writing letters followed by a brief planning meeting. Please feel free to get involved in whatever capacity you are comfortable with. This zine can't happen without you!
