Alex Tha Great (Given Real Encouragement Amongst Turmoil) is a playwright, spoken word artist, actress, vocalist, and activist originally from East Palo Alto, CA, now based in Fort Worth, TX. She was a member of the 2012 and 2014 Fort Worth Slam Team and 2013 Dallas Slam Team and one of 72 competitors in the 2014 Women of the World Poetry Slam. A graduate of the University of California, Irvine with a African American Studies and Claremont Graduate University with a M.A. in Cultural Studies, she has performed since 2011 in various venues, conferences, and stages across the country and has worked as a teaching artist for Big Thought.

Some of her greatest performance achievements have included sharing the stage with actress Irma P. Hall and opening for R & B singer Noel Gourdin and being nominated for Best Female Spoken Word Artist in the 2014 North Texas Spoken Word Awards. Her work has been published in Illya’s Honey, Bohemia, The Voices Project, The Legendary, and Linden Avenue as well as G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised in the South): An Anthology on Southern Queer Womyn’s Voices and Their Allies. Her award winning one woman show Passport to Womanhood (directed by Prudence Sneed) debuted in spring of 2013 and toured following that for a year. She is the author of Sticks and Stones Don’t Break My Bones (2012) and her new book Black Souls Dance On Beat, but sometimes sing off key is slated for release in May of 2015. Her first full length play Hair and There Been There Done That is expected to reach the stage in 2015 as well.

She has future plans to enter a PhD program in African American Studies and become a college professor but for now her work as Assistant Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth keeps her busy. Some of the items on her bucket list include learning how to play the piano, starring in a Broadway musical, and riding an elephant. She lives by the motto: Live Life. Love Life. Be Blessed.

Neo-Soul Lounge is Austin's Premiere Open Mic venue. Participation is open to everyone. There is a $6 cover starting at 8 pm.
