"Not-So-Young Turks: an Exploration of Otherworldly Turkish Cinema," by Tim League and Joe Ziemba

During a brief, beautiful time the young Republic of Turkey had no copyright laws. A vibrant film industry grew out of this wild-east of cinema. Tim League and Joe Ziemba will discuss this era and share "classics" such as Turkish takes on Spiderman, Star Wars and beyond.

Tim League is the founder and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Joe Ziemba is an art director and programmer for the Alamo Drafthouse, as well as host of Terror Tuesday, Austin's weekly ground zero for horror treasures in 35mm.

"Herbert and : The Unintentional Meta-Messiah in 'Jodorowsky's Dune'," by Brandy Eileen Allatt

The seminal idea that spawned Frank Herbert's epic 'Dune' series revolved around the dangers of heroes and messiahs. Brandy Eileen will briefly explore Herbert's opinions on the dangers of heroes, as reflected in the 'Dune' novels and his non-fiction essays, before showing how Jodorowsky's failure to complete his 'Dune' adaptation exemplifies Herbert's theme of the inevitable fallibility of messiah figures.

Brandy Eileen Allatt finished her MA in Literature, with a concentration in science fiction studies, last fall at Texas State University. Her thesis, "Lies and Individuation: External and Internal Authority in the Politics and Anima of 'Dune'" is available online.
