The DJ Is My Griot Is an original production that explores the figure of the DJ as a modern day Griot, a storyteller who maintains the tradition of oral history in Western Africa. The DJ along with ensemble cast members will lead the audience in an exploration of history, appropriation, and Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean dance traditions that inform popular culture today. In this piece our audience will be introduced to new and popular dances of America such as the "Nae Nae" and the "Whip" all the way back to the “Ring Shout” danced in the 1800’s by African slaves as a form of communication. All in all The DJ is My Griot pays tribute to black peoples contribution and impacts on society through a performance that is a celebratory investigation of blackness through physical performance .
