Experience the radical self-care of putting away all electronics, turning off your phone and turning on your creativity. In the style of journal writing workshops, we write by hand – pen on paper – in response to writing prompts and class content. With a focus on the process and experience of writing, there is no critiquing – only gentle encouragement in a non-academic, creative environment. No writing experience is necessary. Since 1997 I’ve designed and taught non-academic, community writing workshops such as Write Your Life as a Woman, Collecting Your Memories and the Closet Fiction Writer’s Workshop. I also offer one-to-one coaching/mentoring sessions for writing projects. My credits include: commentary in Austin Monthly; Austin American-Statesman op ed; recent essays and the previous long-running “skirt tales” column in the original skirt! Magazine; body/mind/spirit column, features and reporting in the (Charleston) Post and Courier and the Columbia Free Times, Columbia Business Journal, Charleston Regional Business Journal, short stories and feminism column in Point. What happens in class… Escape all things digital – we write by hand with pen or pencil on paper. Old school. Phones are turned completely off and stored securely in another room. We write and read out loud in class. However, you can always “pass” and no one will mind a bit. (Bullies do not take this class. Only really nice people take this class.) Even if you don’t like to write, don’t worry… words will be spilling out of you right away… it’s magical. Guaranteed good for the head and heart. Details: Bring your favorite pens or pencils and your favorite paper – journal, notepad or loose leaf paper. Leave your computer at home. Be prepared to turn your phone off. Some snacks and water are provided. You’re welcome to bring snacks. Wear comfortable clothes for gentle yoga and movement breaks.
