Hobart has become a super popular destination (in fact, one of the top ten trending destinations in the world for 2026, according to Expedia data), so it’s no surprise the city needed a big, new hotel. And the DoubleTree by Hilton is situated so you can easily explore the best of everything the city has to offer. In fact, there wasn’t a single location (restaurant, café or pub) I plugged into my Google Map that wasn’t within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Why stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart?
It’s right in the heart of Hobart’s CBD, a short stroll from the main retail centre, Constitution Dock, Salamanca Place and all the waterfront restaurants, galleries and markets that make this city tick. My absolute favourite part? The view from my room. As one of the tallest buildings around (eight levels of rooms), the floor-to-ceiling windows allow you views of the harbour, the hills beyond, and the beautiful heritage architecture. The view is like a painting that changes as the day (and weather) does.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart also has good facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, gym and lovely sauna, plus a good restaurant and bar.
What are the rooms at DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart like?
I stayed in a Deluxe Water View room with a great view and all the natural light. The bed was comfy, there was a desk facing that view, fast free wifi, a big flatscreen TV, a little bar fridge, a rainfall shower, decent storage space, a quick-to-respond air temperature control, tea making facilities, robes and slippers.
The bathroom had a little dim sensor light that gave me a little hint of light when I went to the bathroom at night, which I really liked for help with navigating the unfamiliar space. There’s a wall feature on the wall above the bed – a stylised photo of the harbour and sail boats, which means you’re looking at the harbour both in and from your room.
You can order room service from the hotel’s restaurant, which dishes up really delicious food made from great Tassie produce.
Where to eat and drink
The hotel’s restaurant, Leatherwood Bar & Kitchen, leans into excellent Tasmanian produce. That's where they serve the buffet breakfast, and then they serve a surprisingly good all-day menu. During our stay, we ate generous serves of Tasmanian scallops (of course), slow-cooked lamb with mash and red wine jus, chicken Marylands with delicious crispy skin, and sides of broccolini with goat curd as well as mac and cheese gratin. Mouth-wateringly good. They also make a pretty great dirty Martini at the bar.
At Leatherwood Bar & Kitchen, they also offer a Le Petit Chef experience, where 3D animated images are projected onto your table so that you can watch the world's tiniest chef prepare your meal and serve it up. So kinda like dinner and a show (on your table).
Of course, you’re in Hobart, so you’re also going to go on an eating (and drinking) tour of the city. The hotel is a short walk nearby all the cafés and pubs of the main town (including the In the Hanging Garden restaurants and bars, Staple Coffee and Pigeon Whole Bakers). It’s an even shorter walk to the Salamanca Market (Saturdays), and all the historic pubs of Salamanca Place (including The Whaler), as well as the restaurants and bars along the harbourfront (e.g. Restaurant Maria and Customs House Hotel). I also highly recommend the Callington Mill Distillery restaurant and bar at Macq01 on the water.
What’s the service like?
The hotel might be big, but the service is still small-town warm. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Check-in is from 3pm, and check-out is an easy 12pm (how good!) – so you can sleep in after a night of indulging in Tassie wine and whisky. There’s secure onsite parking.
What facilities does DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart have?
There’s an indoor pool, a well-equipped gym, and a Scandi-style sauna – all on level 1. As mentioned, there’s Leatherwood Bar & Restaurant, a buffet breakfast, room service, fast and free wifi throughout the hotel.
What’s the area like around DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart?
It’s on a main road (Macquarie Street), but I swear every one of my destinations that I plugged into Google Maps (the ferry wharf for getting to MONA, Customs House Hotel, Restaurant Maria, Salamanca Place, The Whaler pub, La Sardina Loca wine bar, Pigeon Whole Bakers, etc, etc – yes, I did a lot of eating and drinking) was a 10-minute walk away (give or take a minute). It’s also an easy drive to Mount Wellington, MONA and Hobart’s other highlights, so you can go from city to mountain to museum in a single afternoon.
