Every five years, millions of people across Australia participate in one massive national headcount called the Census. That big data collection day has finally arrived (Tuesday, August 11). To make sure you’re fully prepped – and to help you avoid any unexpected fines – we’ve answered all your burning questions on deadlines, lost forms and what to do if you’re travelling or overseas.
When is the Census due?
While there is no strict deadline to accommodate mailed paper forms, the ABS expects your form to be completed on or immediately following Census night (August 11).
Is completing the Census compulsory?
Yes, and failing to submit your form after receiving a legal warning can lead to fines of up to $364 per day.
How to do the Census?
Whether you’re at home, in a hospital, on a houseboat, at a campground or in a retirement village, you must complete the Census wherever you're staying on Census night. In late July, most households were sent an instruction letter with a unique login code to complete the form online, alongside details on how to request a paper form.
What to do if I lost my Census code/form?
You can request a new code or replacement form online via the Census website or by calling the helpline (1800 181 227).
What happens if I miss the deadline or don't fill it out?
You won't be fined without formal warning. The ABS will first send reminders or have a field officer visit your home to help. Fines are only pursued after multiple ignored notices.
Can someone complete the Census separately from their household?
Yes. If you prefer privacy, you can request a Personal Access Code via the Census Contact Centre (1800 181 227) to submit an individual form online or on paper.
What if my Census gets lost in the post?
You won’t be fined for lost mail. You can contact the ABS to get a new code or a replacement paper form.
What if I’m travelling within Australia on Census night?
You must complete the Census wherever you are staying on Census Night – this applies to both local residents and international visitors.
What if I’m overseas on Census night?
If you are outside Australia on Census night, you do not need to fill out a form. The Census only counts people physically present in the country on that date.
What to do if no one is home on Census night? Or if you own a vacant property/holiday home?
If your property or primary home is vacant on Census Night, you must inform the ABS online, advise visiting field staff or call the contact centre (1800 181 227).
Is my Census data confidential?
Yes. Under the Census and Statistics Act 1905, the ABS is legally bound to keep your data confidential. It will not be shared with any government agency, court, police force, landlord, or tax authority
