For many Aussies, a warm, flaky sausage roll is the ultimate road-trip snack. Just the thought of a juicy, spiced log of meat wrapped in buttery pastry makes our mouths water. But not all sausage rolls are created equal. If you’re hunting for the best of the best, you’ve come to the right spot.
Today, The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition announced its 2025 winners – including the coveted title of Australia’s best sausage roll. Now in its 36th year, the nation’s largest and longest-running contest for pies, sausage rolls and pasties attracts hundreds of entries from all corners of the country.
Over three days of competition, all sausage rolls are judged anonymously by a panel of industry experts against a set of criteria: general appearance (size: 10cm to 20cm, colour and uniformity), filling (meat quality, flavour, colour and texture) and pastry (flakiness, colour and eating quality). Points are deducted if the filling shrinks after baking – because Aussies love their sausage rolls golden and chunky.
In 2025, Banana Boogie Bakery took out the top prize for its classic beef sausage roll wrapped in puff pastry. This bright yellow Adelaide bakery is no stranger to the spotlight, having won the title of Australia's best sausage roll at the Baking Association of Australia’s South Australian Baking Show in both 2023 and 2024. It also recently came runner-up for Australia’s best vanilla slice at The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph.

With locations in Belair and North Plympton, Banana Boogie pumps out up to 4,000 sausage rolls per day, each stuffed to the brim and baked to golden perfection.
When we asked their team what makes their sausage rolls so special, they said: “It’s the top-notch flaky pastry crafted by our most experienced bakers. The meat has to be top-notch and have the right amount of fat content so it doesn’t shrink. The balance of seasonings is also immensely important.”
After missing out on the win last year, Banana Boogie’s bakers reformulated the recipe, and clearly, the judges loved it. Adding to the celebrations, first-year apprentice, Lauren, was crowned Australia’s top apprentice pastry chef.
The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition also hands out prizes for the best plain pie, gourmet pie and pastie, along with categories for the top vegetarian, gluten-free, seafood pies and more. You can see the full results here and check out the major winners below.
