For anyone lucky enough to grow up in Tasmania during the '90s, the school excursion to the historic Cadbury factory in Claremont was the ultimate golden ticket. It gave sugar-obsessed kids a behind-the-scenes look at the chocolate-making magic, with more free samples than any parent would approve. Well, anyone who missed out on that experience since 2008 – when public tours ended – is in for an absolute treat. Australia’s original Cadbury site has just received the green light to build a brand-new Chocolate Experience right next door, complete with a tasting lab, build-your-own-bar studio and chocolate emporium.

While Cadbury first unveiled grand plans for the “world’s ultimate chocolate experience” in late 2025, this $150 million project has been years in the making. Now, the Glenorchy City Council has finally given the landmark chocolate attraction the official tick of approval. The economic impact on Tasmania is expected to be massive, with the Chocolate Experience projected to attract 431,000 visitors a year and inject more than $120 million into the Tasmanian economy annually.

Located just next door to the historic Cadbury factory in Claremont, the building’s exterior will draw inspiration from the iconic foil chocolate wrapper. In their proposal to the Glenorchy City Council, local project architects Cumulus Studio explained, “Just as peeling back foil reveals a rich, indulgent centre, the interior of the Chocolate Experience offers a striking contrast to its outer shell.

“Stepping inside, guests move from the building's nondescript, reflective exterior into a hidden, sensory-rich world."

Visitors will begin their journey in Chocolate Central, where a mesmerising LED whirlpool of virtual chocolate awaits. From there, they’ll move through a series of immersive zones, including a twilight cacao forest, a hands-on chocolate lab and a playful paint-your-flavour room.

Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to indulge in Cadbury’s iconic chocolate, with a Taste Kitchen, a Chocolate Lounge and a Premium Chocolate Studio. Here, you can watch artisan chocolatiers at work, build your own bar or take part in expert-led chocolate masterclasses. The tour reaches its grand finale at the Emporium, where you can sample the different flavours and shop for personalised gifts that aren’t available anywhere else in the world. Just don’t eat all your goodies on the way home!

Cadbury’s chocolate-themed experience is slated for completion by September 2028. While it seems far off, we know it’ll be 100 per cent worth it.
