The Gold Coast has been named Australia’s second-best for coffee, only behind Melbourne

Australia is a nation full of legends who love to rise and grind! Globally, we have a reputation for mornings fueled by sunrise swims, beach jogs, avo toast and, of course, seriously good coffee. While the country is packed with world-class coffee shops – including seven of the best on Earth for 2026 – some cities just brew it better than others. We’ve got the tea… (and it’s caffeinated).
To uncover Australia’s coffee hotspots, Travelbag analysed 40 major locations across the country using a range of coffee-related metrics. Rather than just ranking each spot on average review scores, they also considered the average cost of a cup and the density of cafés per square kilometre, giving a fuller picture of where coffee culture truly thrives.
After grinding through the data, Melbourne claimed the crown as Australia’s number one city for coffee. Long regarded as the nation’s coffee capital, the Victorian city boasts the highest café density at 0.88 per square kilometre – that’s 2,155 coffee spots – and ranks second for average review score (4.71), just behind Sydney. Standouts include Proud Mary Coffee and Vacation Coffee, which both landed in the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list released last month.
Sydney and Melbourne are often pitted against each other for the title of Australia’s coffee capital, but the runner-up might surprise you. While Sydney is the highest-rated Australian city for coffee – boasting an average review rating of 4.72 out of five for its 2,324 cafés – the Gold Coast claims second place overall.
More than just a city of acai bowls and bug rolls, the Gold Coast has the second-highest number of cafés per square kilometre (0.84, or 346 in total) and a solid average review rating of 4.4. Though it has far fewer coffee shops than Melbourne or Sydney, hotspots like Stairwell Coffee and No Name Lane rival the best cafés in the Aussie capitals. Plus, the coffee here is slightly cheaper on average ($5.38) than in Melbourne ($5.55) or Sydney ($5.48).
The top 10 also features smaller but emerging coffee hubs, including Launceston in fourth, Wollongong in sixth and Ballarat in seventh. You can check out the full top ten below.
