Bargain hunters, boy do we have big news for you. Last year, Costco revealed plans to open two new warehouses in 2027 – in Victoria and Western Australia. Now, the membership-based supermarket retailer is aiming even higher, announcing 20 new stores across Australia over the next five years, including a long-awaited expansion into Tasmania.

Since making its Aussie debut in 2009, the US bulk-buy giant has grown to 15 stores nationwide, raking in an estimated $5 billion in annual sales. There are currently four Costco warehouses each in Victoria and NSW, three in Queensland, two in Western Australia, and one in both South Australia and the ACT. Two more stores have been officially confirmed for 2027 – in Pakenham, Melbourne and Alkimos, Perth – but from there, the total is set to more than double.

Realcommercial.com.au reports that the discount supermarket retailer plans to open 20 new Australian warehouses over the next five years. You’re probably wondering where they’ll pop up. While potential locations are still being scoped, Costco has revealed it’s currently focusing on North and South Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.

Word on the street is that the retailer is also planning to open its first-ever store in Geelong, as well as Hobart. Tasmania has long yearned for a discount supermarket, with The Greens even proposing a $30 million scheme to attract more discount supermarkets and challenge the island state's current supermarket duopoly.

Site scouting is currently underway, with land availability being the main consideration. Each warehouse requires roughly 14,000 square metres of building space, which is roughly the size of two football fields. Mega!
