Dollarama is rebranding all existing Reject Shops in an attempt to compete with Kmart and Big W

Update Wednesday, May 27: The massive Reject Shop transformation is officially underway, with a total Dollarama takeover expected for all existing storefronts by 2027. You can expect select locations to close briefly as they rebrand and stock the shelves with new, low-cost Dollarama products.
It’s the end of an era! For many Australians, the Reject Shop has been a go-to treasure trove for random delights, ranging from $5 strawberry-shaped mugs and beehive bird feeders to American candy and bargain body care. But the discount retailer is set to undergo a major revamp over the next three years as it plans to take on the likes of Kmart and Big W.
In early 2025, The Reject Shop was snapped up by Canadian company Dollarama – which has more than 1,600 stores across North and Latin America. As part of its $259 million Aussie acquisition, the brand will gradually convert all current Reject Shops into Dollaramas, rebranding them as low-cost general merchandise supermarkets. So while the name is disappearing for good, the stores themselves aren’t going anywhere.
The rebrand is already underway, with the full conversion of all existing stores expected by the end of the 2027 financial year. Behind the scenes, the franchise is slowly introducing select Dollarama merchandise and reducing prices. If that means our dollars are gonna stretch even further, we’re on board!
Case in point: a four-litre bottle of Omo Washing Liquid is just $19 at the new Dollarama stores, which is $5 cheaper than at Coles or Woolworths. Similarly, you can score an $8 box of Cadbury Favourites at Dollarama, which would otherwise set you back $14 at the major supermarkets.
All 395 existing Reject Shops are set to be fully converted within the next three years, and the chain isn’t stopping there. By 2034, Dollarama plans to roll out another 300 stores across Australia, giving it a bigger footprint than Kmart, Big W and Target combined. It’s no small change (pun intended), but the thrill of the bargain hunt will live on.
