If you asked me to guess the cheapest day to travel, I would’ve picked something midweek – perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday. I definitely wouldn’t have said Friday, which Expedia has revealed is actually the most affordable day to fly in Australia, thanks to fewer business trips at the end of the week. Looks like your long weekend just booked itself.

The fresh data from Expedia’s Air Hacks Report reveals travellers who fly on Friday can save up to 12 per cent compared with those departing on a Sunday. If you do the quick maths, that’s extra moolah for a nice dinner or rooftop drinks on your trip. In saying that, Friday is also the busiest day to travel in Australia, particularly during the morning rush, while Tuesday is the quietest day for those hoping to avoid the crowds.

The report also reveals that February is both the most affordable and quietest month to travel, with routes across Asia and the South Pacific seeing some of the biggest airfare drops. Travelling just after the summer school holidays end could save you up to 74 per cent (around $520) on flights compared with the busiest month, which is unsurprisingly December. Ho Chi Minh? Phuket? Seoul? See ya soon.

If you seriously hate the airport rush, the quietest travel dates fall in mid-March and late July. Meanwhile, the most hectic dates to avoid are Good Friday and Boxing Day.

Expedia also shared some bonus intel on the most affordable booking window, which is four to six weeks before departure for economy flights. Bring on the impromptu getaways! Travellers who book just a few weeks out can save an average of $40 on domestic flights or $140 on international flights compared with those who book tickets six months ahead. We know leaving things to the last minute can cause a lot of stress for some, so even those who book about three months in advance can save around $75.
