While most Aussies have settled into a comfortable hybrid office-home routine, others have ditched the classic nine-to-five altogether to take their jobs on the road. Whether you’re currently embracing the digital nomad lifestyle or ready for a change of scenery, the 2026 Rumavi Global Relocation Index has revealed the absolute best remote work destinations on Earth – and the top spot is just an easy direct flight from Australia. Think sun, street food and spotless Wi-Fi.
To find the ultimate remote work hub, the researchers assessed 192 countries on everything from cost of living and tax rules to safety and visa access. They then re-weighted those factors for different personas, including remote workers seeking their next overseas base.
Claiming the top spot as the world's best destination for digital nomads is Malaysia. For starters, the Southeast Asian country has its own DE Rantau Nomad Pass, which allows Aussies to live and work remotely there for up to 24 months without relying on short-term tourist visas. Better yet, the pass covers your family and lets you travel freely across the country’s tropical islands, bustling cities and lush rainforests.
Logistically, Malaysia scored a solid 80 out of 100 for digital infrastructure, meaning spotty Wi-Fi shouldn't be an issue – unless you're working off-grid from one of the country's many stunning islands. English is also widely spoken, which makes navigating and networking a breeze. On top of that, living costs sit roughly 30 to 40 per cent below other popular Asian nomad hotspots like Singapore and Hong Kong – so your dollar stretches considerably further.
That said, Malaysia performed poorly in the business opportunity category. With a score of just 39 out of 100, it’s probably not the best place to launch your next big startup.
If you’re keen to trial the digital nomad life in Malaysia, it’s super easy to reach from Australia. Most major city airports offer direct flights, starting at just 5.5 hours from Perth to 8.5 hours from the east coast.
