Achterland

The prestigious dance company Rosas, founded by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in the early 1980s, brings to the Mercat de les Flors 'Achterland', a seminal choreography in De Keersmaeker’s oeuvre, which she created in 1990 and performed for the last time in 1998. With this piece the choreographer, for the first time, gave the musicians a central and active position on the stage, and the unusual combination of the compositions by György Ligeti and Eugène Ysaÿe inspired De Keersmaeker and her dancers to create an original dance score with a delicate balance between energetic virtuosity and deceleration. This also was the choreographer’s first time writing dancing material specifically for men; she added three male dancers to what until that point had been a predominantly female company.
