Although it may be all very well and good to defend places that are the pinnacle of authenticity, sometimes you need to detox from the cocktail bars of old and wet your whistle among the new generation. Not all quality bars have to look like Ye Olde Watling, and not all barmen are required to resemble Sam Malone’s ageing uncle.

Coppelia exquisitely combines the concepts of designer club – magnificent interior design – with a premium cocktail bar. And unlike many similar enterprises where aesthetics trump the bartender, the brains behind this cathedral, Christian Rubio, has managed to make his idea a reality that works with the precision of a Cartier. Coppelia has found the optimal temperature between coolness and liver: of course it’s sophisticated (gorgeous leather sofas), elegant (warm black parquet), modern (house and funk sessions), but it also has one of the best menus of signature cocktails in town.

At the bar you’ll find the life-long classics and a full range of gins and tonics, but branch out and browse the menu of house recipes. Feast your eyes on the pomegranate mojito and the Elixir – a delight with a touch of lychee that will make even your teeth happy. The potions aren’t cheap, but sometimes it's better to pay €12 euros for a good drink than €30 for four mixed turpentines. And Coppelia’s staff are some of the most attentive in Barcelona, with a select clientele of VIP business types and a parade of seemingly Photoshopped women. All that’s missing is the hot tub.
