London boutique chain the Hoxton loses none of its spirit at its Barcelona outpost, which has been welcoming guests in the city’s creative district since 2022. The Poblenou hotel has 240 rooms, a Mexican taqueria and a Detroit-style pizza slice shop – but what most people shout about is its spectacular rooftop pool (the chain’s first in Europe), which comes with rather epic Sagrada Familia views. The vintage photo booth in the lobby is a nod to their mostly young, fashion-forward crowd.
Rooms come with a mini fridge, tea and coffee station, desk, TV, and good air-con (very important in Barcelona), as well as exceedingly comfortable beds. I stayed in the ‘Biggy’ room, which is ideal for groups, with both a super king-sized bed and a generous sofa bed – as well as a walk-in rainfall shower, and enough space to hang clothes and kick off shoes. The space is warm and breezy, with textured tapestries and abstract art adorning the walls, and a colour scheme in line with the rest of the hotel – bright interiors, terracotta floors, faded florals and geometric patterns. The little Roberts radio was a welcome addition for sunny mornings.
There’s Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, parking onsite, and you can make sunbed and cabana reservations for the rooftop pool. The hotel doesn’t have its own gym, but it does partner with nearby gyms you can ask the front desk about. We were more there for the relaxing, drink-in-hand experience, but the option’s there if you fancy it.
There’s Four Corners on the ground floor for Italian-American dishes (lobster pasta, fluffy focaccia and the likes), with a nice outdoor terrace and natural wine menu. You’ll also find the Bodega’s thick-crust pizza slice shop on the same floor – we inhaled the Red Top (packed with cheese) in probably five minutes. Tope, on the roof, serves up excellent tacos and margaritas, including much-needed frozen ones (though we had a bit of confusion about the menus, which seemed to depend on whereabouts you were sunbathing).
The stand out is breakfast, which features everything you could want from croissants and baked goods to eggs (any style on request) and make-your-own yoghurt bowls. We even turned our orange juice into morning mimosas with the free-flowing prosecco (laid out on weekends). Most things are included except for extras like specialty coffee, but it’s well-priced – the matcha I ordered came in at £2.
Industrial-chic and very near the beach, Poblenou is the place to be. We popped down to Rambla del Poblenou for an ice cream, tucked into paella by the sea, and dipped in and out of endless street-corner tapas bars. Gaudí favourites are all walkable from the hotel, and the metro gives easy access to further-out parts of the city.
