Time Out says
The 27th edition of Sónar and the 9th edition of Sónar+D have been moved from 2020 to 2021. As of June 2020, the organisation is working to reschedule as many of the artists and activities as possible that were set for the June 2020 dates (see below) into the 2021 dates.
After moving its dates to the end of July last year, the Sónar festival of arts, design, and electronic and advanced music returns to its usual month of June for its 27th edition. As always, the festival happenings are divided between Sónar by Day in the Fira de Barcelona Monjuïc and Sónar by Night in the Fira Gran Via in nearby Hospitalet, with more than 100 shows including the new immersive audiovisual show from The Chemical Brothers (confirmed for 2021), in which the British duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons mix their hits with songs from their new album 'No Geography' (2019).
The French duo of epic electronica THE BLAZE perform their only concert in 2020 exclusively at Sónar; and the same goes for Swedish progressive house DJ and producer Eric Prydz. The clubbing project DESPACIO, an experience created by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and brothers David and Stephen Dewaele (2manydjs), is back this year, and making their Sónar by Night debut.
Innovative Venezuelan artist Arca will also perform at Sónar by Night for an exclusive show. There will be more debut performances, like that of Telefon Tel Aviv, a new show from British artist Mura Masa and American act Battles. And when it comes to technology and music, standouts include the UK's Max Cooper, presenting his latest work with a massive show of sound, visuals and technology on the enormous SonarClub stage; the return of Koreless along with regular collaborator Emmanuel Biard; and Japanese artist Ryochi Kurokawa, who brings a show filled with 3D effects and laser lights.
Also not to be missed are DJ heavy hitters like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Helena Hauff, Âme, Joy Orbison, Charlotte de Witte, Avalon Emerson, 2manydjs and The Black Madonna (who will close Sónar by Night).
The newest sounds around are represented by the likes of British rapper Dave, who won the prestigious Mercury Prize; AJ Tracey; and the return of charismatic New Yorker MC Princess Nokia, performing from her new album.
New this year on urban scene is SonarXS with a new space where you can see artists like Morad, Kaydy Cain, Ms Nina, Chenta Tsai-BaoBae (a new project from Putochinomaricón), and the anticipated live ragey flamenco show from Califato ¾. Big-name local acts are on the roster as well, such as the Barcelona duo Hidrogenesse, a new project from Niño de Elche, the return of Maria Arnal, Marcel Bagés with the hit of his first album under his belt, and the delicate piano of Carlos Viarnès along with visual creator Alba G. Corral.
