With tensions rising in the country, the presidential couple have just escaped unharmed from an assassination attempt that ended the life of the first lady's beloved dog and a colonel. The terror that they feel - accentuated by the risk of being assassinated by their own son, who has joined the anarchist forces - gradually reveals the gulf that separates the apparent solidity of the regime from its actual fragility and mediocrity.
