Barcelona's seaside neighbourhood celebrates its big neighbourhood party, or Festa Major, from September 25 to 29 in honour of Sant Miquel, the patron saint of Barceloneta. You'll come across five days of parties in the decorated streets that get underway with the traditional opening speech (Wed 25, 7pm), followed by the singing of 'havaneres' and a live performance by the group Morralla.
You'll also enjoy the famous Barceloneta Cannon (Sun 29, 10am), which heads out into the streets with General Lagarto, as it shoots out sweets and little toys for kids along the way. The 'correfoc' (fire run) is Saturday the 28th, starting at 8.30pm, with a beastly parade and ending with the verses being read in Plaça de la Barceloneta.
The Festa Major ends Sunday, September 29. In the morning you can see a championship of the local beach game Ta-ka-ta, at 11am it's time for the floral offering at the Parroquia de Sant Miquel del Port and a parade of flags, and at night, from 10pm, do not miss the fireworks you can see from Passeig Marítim.
