Carnival 2016: The First Feast

Carnival is the world's gastronomic festival par excellence, and it gets cooking today, Fat Thursday. Traditional local fat-inducing foods include 'botifarra d'ou' ('botifarra' sausage made with egg), 'tortillas' (omelettes) and 'cocas de chicharrones' (a type of sweet bread made with pork rinds). There's also lots of other types of cheap and cheerful food, the city's markets have a decorating contest, and it's time for the 'Primer Tiberi', or First Feast, which is a party full of the excesses of Carnival, music, acrobatics and other performances, and general revelry.
