Subtitled the ‘Institute for Advanced Drinking’, this tiny bar is a Berlin classic, largely thanks to its eccentric owner, Gregor Scholl, who is ever present, smartly dressed in bow tie and waistcoat. There is no menu: Scholl will ask which spirit you like, and whether you want something süss oder sauer (sweet or sour). A short while later he’ll come back with one of the best cocktails you’ll ever taste (until the next one). Don’t waste his time or talent asking for a caipirinha. You have to ring the bell for access, and it’s worth calling ahead to check there’s space.

I was just in Berlin for the first time and went to this bar with 3 local friends and 2 more that were visiting. We ordered several cocktails which were fairly good, although not amazing. I liked the atmosphere and the music so I did not mind paying more for that.
However, at the end, we received a piece of paper with random numbers from which we could not make out the exact amount each one of us had to pay. Plus, they appeared to have overcharged the Gin Fizz cocktail (in the menu it was 9EUR but they had charged it 11EUR). Given that we had drank about 10 of them, we were overcharged for 20EUR.
The waiter was firstly very sarcastic when we asked for the specific prices, and then, when we pointed out the price difference, he was extremely rude, saying that they had increased the prices and this is the price now, period. He suggested that we might get a better price next time. When my friend said that this kind of behavior does not exactly encourage people to come back, he said that they would keep our space for someone else, implying that they are quite popular and it is easy to fill their bar; I guess that is true, since there is only space for about 15 people in there.
Overall, it was a quite disappointing experience. My friend said the owner was not there on that night and I am mainly writing this review, which I will also post on Trip Advisor and any other site I can find this bar on, just to make sure that the owner knows what is happening when he is not there. If he does know, I am sorry but this is not even remotely acceptable customer service.
