One of Germany's leading theatre companies, established by Bertolt Brecht and his wife in 1949, the Berliner Ensemble moved to its current Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm location in Mitte in 1954. Flourishing ever since, it developed along Brechtian lines until relatively recently, when following administrative ructions following Reunification, the theatre has diversified and refreshed its programme under the stewardship of Claus Peymann, aiming for accessible, thought-provoking programming across the board. Currently, American theatre director Robert Wilson is amongst those doing astonishing work at the venue, bringing Berlin his dark, Expressionist-tinged stagings of pieces as diverse as Peter Pan to Brecht's Threepenny Opera.
