Revamped in 2020, the Budapest History Museum now divides its permanent collection into ten distinct periods, each focusing on a different aspect of human activity at this prime spot by the Danube. This begins with the first inhabitants 50,000 years ago, moving through the Roman and medieval eras. 'Budapest Light and Shadow' investigates how the Hungarian capital developed from the ruins of the Roman settlement of Aquincum to becoming a modern urban metropolis, and a united city straddling the river. Look out for the Gothic sculptures from the reign of King Sigismund in the early 1400s, as well as a regularly changing agenda of fascinating temporary exhibitions, most recently featuring Ottoman craftsmanship and the classic era of space exploration.
