Salterra Resort in South Caicos is a high-end luxury retreat located in a lesser-explored part of the Turks and Caicos. The island, just eight square miles in size, was once the salt capital of the region and is now characterized by expansive salt plains, wild donkeys and untouched overgrowth. This raw, untamed landscape provides a striking contrast to the refined luxury of the resort at its center, offering guests the best of both worlds.
Why stay at Salterra South Caicos?
South Caicos is an environmental marvel defined by its wild, preserved landscape. Overgrown brush, protected land, vibrant coral reefs and abandoned salt flats create a unique ecosystem that supports flamingos, wild donkeys left behind from the island’s salt-farming era and thriving marine life. The island is also home to a marine preservation field station, complete with a working laboratory dedicated to studying and protecting coral reefs. Renowned for its exceptional scuba diving, South Caicos attracts explorers from around the world. While the resort reads as a luxury destination rather than a traditional eco-lodge, its foundation is deeply rooted in environmental stewardship and discovery—further reinforced by the hotel owner’s long history of operating dive resorts throughout the Caribbean.
What are the rooms like at Salterra Resort South Caicos?
The resort just opened in March 2025 after a major renovation of the location's former property and everything feels fresh, modern and brand new. The rooms are spacious and calming, designed in soft, natural tones with sand-colored tile, oversized king beds and private balconies, every single one with an ocean view. First-floor suites even come with small private backyards and hammocks, perfect for unwinding.
Each suite includes thoughtful touches like a minibar, butler service, a comfortable living area and a separate bedroom. The Penthouse takes things up a notch with a fully equipped kitchen, a freestanding soaking tub and multiple bedrooms. Overall, the hotel has a relaxed, spa-like feel and that sense of calm carries right into the rooms. The top-floor suites, with their arched ceilings, feel especially airy and luxurious, making an already generous space feel even more elevated.
Our butler, Greg, was fantastic. Each day we returned to the room to little surprises like towel swans, chocolates, sweets and other thoughtful touches. To make everything seamless, the hotel sets you up at check-in with a number you can text to reach your butler at any time. Whether you need extra towels, room service or help with anything else, it’s all just a text away. You can also use it to get updates on events and activities happening around the resort. We happened to be there during the food and wine festival and each day Greg shared a detailed breakdown of that day’s events, which made it incredibly easy to plan.
What’s the food like at Salterra Resort South Caicos?
Salterra is located in one of the most beautiful places in the world, so it says a lot that the food and drink program is actually the main reason I’d recommend a visit. The resort features six food and dining venues in addition to poolside and in-room dining. The offerings range from food-truck-style bites to elegant white-tablecloth service, with a strong focus on sustainably sourced Caribbean cuisine.
Breakfast is served at Regatta, where guests can choose between a classic buffet or à la carte options such as eggs Benedict, pancakes and other breakfast staples.
What truly sets Salterra’s culinary program apart, however, is the resort’s Food and Wine Festival. The resort invites renowned restaurants from around the world to host immersive, multi-day food festivals. During my stay, Bicyclette from Florida took over the property, hosting curated dinners, hands-on seminars (including a ceviche workshop), rum tastings and excursions.
One highlight was a boat trip to a private island, where the chefs built a grill out of abandoned conch shells and prepared a spectacular feast of seafood, rosé and steaks. On the final night of my stay, I experienced a tasting menu at Brine, the resort’s upscale dining venue, featuring a combination of local delicacies and the Bicyclette team’s signature dishes. Not a single course underperformed.
What is the service like at Salterra?
The service at Salterra is excellent. The team is attentive and has clearly undergone extensive training to anticipate all guests’ needs. And it’s not just the housekeeping, butlers and wait staff that maintain a level of excellence. So does the Expeditions team, who brought us off-roading to one of the most beautiful kayaking experiences I’ve ever been on, through shallow salt plains with views of small, non-scary sharks and rays.
Throughout the experience, they had everything planned, with coolers full of drinks and timing down to a perfect science, hitting the road home just as everyone started to get tired. The level of thought given to these details is what sets a hotel like this apart from really great to phenomenal. The staff seems to love what they do; they learn guests’ names and create a genuine sense of community on the property that’s usually hard to find in vacation resorts like this one.
What is the property like at Salterra Resort & Spa?
The property is beautiful, with all the rooms and buildings arranged in a horseshoe around one large pool and a large marble staircase leading down to a natural white-sand beach. Palm trees and natural brush create a peaceful environment. There’s also a smaller paddling pool for kids off to the side and the upper deck of the main pool is adults-only. There’s a large hot tub off the pool deck; it’s figure-eight shaped and fits two small groups nicely, though as the sun sets you may find yourself waiting for access.
The spa also has a small pool, a hot tub and several sauna rooms that are open to all guests, as well as spa treatments available to book for an additional fee.
Why should you book a stay at Salterra Resort?
If you’re looking for a fun, nature-based experience without sacrificing amenities and luxury, Salterra Resort is the perfect place to stay. If you can line your visit up with one of the resort’s food and wine festivals, I highly recommend doing so, as it’s what truly sets this resort apart from any other I’ve stayed at. The staff is kind, welcoming and thoughtful, the food is outstanding, the activities are well planned and the location is something special. I would recommend it to just about anyone.
