Ok, full disclosure, I don’t frequent nail bars too often. Although, with a wife, daughter and mother at home, I do probably visit them more than many other cisgender males. Either way, for the sake of accuracy, I’ve teamed up with my most informed nail bar addicts to bring together a list of Chiang Mai’s best nail bars this side of 2025. And while this list is not exhaustive, it is growing every day, so bookmark and revisit every time those ten shimmering finger ends need a little colour or pizzazz.

1. Nail Is Happy

Nails happy, customers happy! At least, that’s the theory anyway. Nail Is Happy is one of those slightly hidden locations that, despite appearances, make for some incredible results. Located in the student district of Suthep, there’s no doubt that big bold colours and extensive nail accessories are top of the list for most customers here. With first place awards at the London BC Awards for master division tip box gel painting, this is where to come for artistic nail work, specialising in everything from your favourite Disney characters to artistic flourishes thought up fresh on the day – you now know where the pros are found. With designs so intricate, it’s obviously by appointment only.

47/30 Moo 8 Tentawan Village. Facebook. 096-951-1007. 10am-8pm, closed Thursday. Reservation required here.

2. Men Do Nail

If you’re wondering why the name, then think literally and you’ll have your answer. Here, over-friendly self-declared ladboys of style pick up tools and paint nails without care for age, colour, creed or taste. But don’t let her personality put you off, she may be big spirited but her work is careful, stylish and of exceptional quality. Locals flock here for both banter and manicures, with everything from gel polishes to acrylic extensions and multi-dimensional artwork on the menu. Not to mention a healthy list of eyelash options too to really complete the look.

23 Tepprarit Road, Chang Phueak. Facebook. 088-404-4256. 10am-11pm.

3. Ritchi Nail Studio

Local, friendly and easygoing, the folks at Ritchi Nail Studio really do offer something for everyone. Whether it’s fancy nail designs, simple re-coats or durable gel designs, their reasonable prices, steady hands and creative nature make it a favourite among locals and foreigners alike. Verified results that are long-lasting, crack free and stunning to look at, there’s no wonder you need to book in advance to even make it through the door.

12 Kaeo Nawarat Soi 3. 098-783-5822. 10am-7pm, closed Wednesdays. Reservation required here.

4. Snow Nail

This nail bar is not just for getting your own nails pained, but their extensive course offerings also let you learn how to do nails professionally too – if you can afford the B20,000 price tag. Applauded for not gatekeeping their profession, this spot is as delicate as they are dedicated. What’s more is their low prices mean you can get a whole set of gel nails for a few hundred baht, with optional PVC extensions for a few satang more. While they offer varied styles depending on your mood, they are not ashamed to admit excelling at creating softer, gradient hues that are simply otherworldly.

40 Rim Nam Mansion, Canal Road. Facebook. 098-287-5196. 10am-8pm. Reservation required.

5. Kornernails

If you’re looking for a gel manicure in under 30 minutes, then she’s got you. Skilled in both the technical and artistic aspects of nail design, Kornernails is often heralded as at top go-to for exact design replication and colour matching – especially important if you’re matching nails to outfits. From art design and decoration all the way to 3D designs and tip extensions, delicate hands make light work of any request. However, be sure to bring cash and book in advance as this is an ‘in-hand’ operation in every sense of the word, darling.

Soi 3 Siri Mangkalajarn Road. Instagram. LINE @xcq5835w. By appointment only.

6. Neo Nails Art

If you’re up for the drive or simply happen to find yourself out of town just past Mae Rim and are in need of an urgent nail rework, then Neo Nails Art has you covered. Sure, the location can be a bit offputting if you’re in the heart of town, but the quality of their work is, but many locals standard, well worth the trip. Dainty yet colourful, the work here is creative but not obtuse, thoughtful yet inexpensive. Talons and gaudy accessories are not usual here, instead natural hues, shimmering faux diamonds and the odd splash of rainbow makes for an eclectic yet tasteful collection of nail designs to choose from.

91 Mookpailin Mansion, San Sai District. Facebook. 096-238-4484. 10am-9pm daily.
