Time Out says

It’s almost bastardising to review Big Banana, simply because of the chokehold it has as one of Delhi’s absolute best dive bars. I haven’t managed to articulate this in the times I’ve been there, which were mostly spent on ordering the same things and leaving in roughly the same state of happiness, but the grandest thing I have to say is that I love it. It’s a crime that it’s often overshadowed by the biggest daddy of Delhi dive bars – 4S – but that means you can still perhaps find a table here without being jostled too much.

The familiar noise of cheer around you is perfectly tempered by the sensible design of the spot: one section’s for slightly calmer catch-ups, where it’s easier to hear, and the other runs into big, grinning, sometimes messy groups of people where recognitions are common. Staff are also incredibly understanding, but firm on noise control, which is perfect. Right opposite of the larger section is a smoking room, for which cigarettes are easily picked up from thekas outside if you’ve forgotten yours. (Though you may get away with being a bum.)

I’m not about to tell you what alcohol to order at a neighbourhood bar. But if you want to try out a cocktail here, by all means, do. They’re a Russian roulette in terms of stiffness (this is where it becomes even more lovely that the staff field all sorts of questions, despite how busy they are). Flavours, though, have always found their rightfully-tasted taker. The menu sticks to their names, many of which were probably whipped up in-house, so it’s sometimes fun to order first and find out later. I've had worse drinks at places that asked me to notice the drinks much more than this. Either way, it’s very unlikely you’re sticking to just one round… so sit back.

As for the food, it’s mainly North Indian and Indo-Chinese, which are obviously Delhi's drunken favourites. While many rave about the biryani, chicken mains and soya chaap (and you’ll likely overhear more recommendations from the table beside you – judge ‘em based on the crazed look in their eyes), I have a soft spot for their smaller dishes or chakna, non-vegetarian or not. Even if you’re a gravy-over-dry, soupy-over-double-spice person, flip that personality over in Big Banana, like I do. Try the chilli mushroom here if you refuse to have it elsewhere.

There is a word for what this bar has built over its years in Saket’s J Block, and the word is culture. Do not mistake that word for a curated waiting list (in fact, you’ll stand inside while you wait, and likely be entertained). It’s more a thing where you’ve abandoned a plan in all senses of the word and your glass is refilled and you’re talking about anything and everything with no fear of being overheard, no matter who you are.
