The Delhi Metro’s reportedly been planning service overhauls for 15 of its stations, adding line interchanges that will effectively connect the Pink and Magenta lines to the Yellow, Red, Blue and Violet lines, according to The Times of India.
Now, if your relationship with the Delhi Metro is marked by, among other things, glimpsing at the map only when you need to figure out a new destination, here’s what that could mean. When these changes are in place, you might not have to rely on Central Delhi while crossing to opposite ends of the city.
Station by station, what’s being planned?
Five stations may become triple line interchange stations: New Delhi and Inderlok which are to be added to the Magenta line, Central Secretariat and Azadpur for a new corridor of the Magenta line, and Lajpat Nagar to the upcoming Golden line.
Eleven more may become interchange stations: Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Chirag Delhi, Saket G Block, Chhatarpur, Tughlakabad, Peeragarhi, Madhuban Chowk, Pulbangash, RK Ashram Marg, and Nabi Karim.
This is drawn out as a Phase IV expansion for the DMRC. The phase after that will see Delhi Aerocity, Terminal 1 IGI Airport, Shivaji Stadium, and Kalindi Kunj potentially becoming interchange stations as well, according to TOI.
New metro corridors
Alongside the interchange overhaul, it was also reported that five corridors are currently being built under the Phase IV expansion: the Krishna Park Extension–Deepali Chowk and Inderlok–Indraprastha routes, both extensions of the Magenta Line, plus two Golden Line corridors, Delhi Aerocity-Tughlakabad and Saket G Block-Lajpat Nagar.
The Rithala-Kundli corridor, extending the Red Line, is also reportedly in progress.
Three more corridors are lined up under Phase V(A): Tughlakabad-Kalindi Kunj and Aerocity–Terminal 1, both further extensions of the Golden Line, and the R.K. Ashram Marg-Indraprastha corridor, extending the Magenta Line as we’ve said.
When will this be done?
No completion date has been announced just yet. In the meantime, we'll be deluding ourselves into thinking the longer interchange walks are 'quick cardio workouts' while we can.
