A nearly-century-old institution that has fuelled Kolkata nostalgia trips since 1927 has opened a standalone café in Delhi-NCR, landing at Galleria Market, Gurugram. More outposts are reportedly incoming across the city in the coming months.
You can imagine that nostalgia trips abound in Kolkata like moths to light, but this isn’t the brand insert kind. Flury’s was the thing for brunches and desserts in Kolkata growing up; it likely is part of any consideration about visiting Park Street, even as some of Bengal’s most legacy-led restaurants and bars dot the area. It was founded by Swiss couple Joseph and Frieda Flury who wanted to bring Swiss tea room culture to Kolkata in 1927, where Indians and British people both took to it.
The Gurugram menu is a greatest-hits set: Rum Balls, Chicken Patties, Buttercream Cubes, fresh cream pastries; you’ve got some French as well with the Millefeuille, Opera, and Paris-Brest. Then there’s the Nolen Gur Crème Brûlée.
Drinks-wise, it's the label's signature Viennese Coffee, alongside espresso, cold brews, frappes and a Chilled Coffee Sprüngli that probably exists to remind you this brand has Swiss roots.
The cafe itself is a snug 16-seater, open 24/7, with archival Park Street photographs on the walls doing their best to manufacture instant sentimentality. The real takeaway, though: A 2am Rum Ball run is now a legitimate life choice.
The fact that this one’s standalone at least is good news. Personally speaking, none of the mall kiosks of Flury’s in Kolkata can match the experience of the Park Street one, as nifty as they are.
