Time Out says

If people can celebrate the creation of new life, why not also celebrate when your friend makes a serious decision to prevent new life? With overpopulation rampant, and the depletion of natural resources already catastrophic, the decision to have children should be taken very seriously. And for those of us who don’t want to be parents anyway, I should hope that taking action to make sure that doesn’t happen accidentally is a cause for celebration indeed. Update: I had a vasectomy on March 13th in Denver, just 13 days before my 36th birthday. And on the 22nd, after a week of rest and recovery, I'll be throwing myself a little vasectomy shower. While I don’t expect friends and family to travel to Colorado, I’d love it if you joined us in spirit from wherever you may be. I'll be playing my first set of music post-babylessness. http://cjboyd.bandcamp.com And I'll be joined by Denver lovelies Mirror Fears http://mirrorfears.bandcamp.com Night Grinder http://nightgrinder.bandcamp.com Show starts at 7 sharp because have to be done with live music at 10. Hope to see Colorado peeps there. As a side note: I have a few reasons for announcing this private matter publicly. Having already told a handful of friends and family about my decision, I have been met with a great deal of opposition, generally taking the form of either (1) some blind faith that EVERYONE should procreate, (2) the feeling that I would make a really great dad, or (3) the worry that I will change my mind later. The first sentiment is dogmatic bullshit, and needs to be checked. The second is irrelevant, since I have no desire to be a dad. And while there is some vague possibility that I’ll wish to be a parent later, I’m more than satisfied with the adoption option. But more to the point, it’s not that I mind talking to friends about my decision at all. I just want my loved ones to respect that it is MY decision, I have thought about it for a very long time, and it’s what I’m doing now. So one reason I made this public announcement was in order to forestall these uncritical, and sometimes rude reactions. The second reason was just to provide a place in cyberspace for people to send their hugs and high fives. I thought about it for years, the decision is done, and now it’s time to celebrate. So if you’re in Colorado, please do join me for the party. And if you’re not, send me your love and support as you please. Also, if you’re so inclined, you can send me gifts like you would if I was having a kid. (If you’re not sure what to send, might I suggest money or gift certificates to Guitar Center, Autozone, or Whole Foods?) Anything you wish to give will be put to good use as I continue touring into my 8th year, all baby-free and happy and stuff. Love, CJ
