How to spend a day in Durban, Fugitive style

Breakfast by the sea, a little history, a proper bunny chow, and dinner on Florida Road. Our Durban day plan is worth following, even if nobody is looking for you.

Even a man on the run has to eat. And in Durban, grabbing something at a petrol station would be a waste of a perfectly good appetite.

With East Coast Radio’s Fugitive on the move, we have put together the day out we would prescribe for someone with limited time and plenty of reasons to keep moving. There is coffee, culture, a little pedalling and enough food to make a second lunch seem reasonable.

The route stays around the beachfront, city centre, Berea and Florida Road. Give yourself a day, leave room between stops, and let Durban do what it does best: persuade you to stay a little longer.

From breakfast to after dark in Durban

Start with breakfast at Durban Beach Café

Make your first appointment with the sea. Durban Beach Café on Snell Parade puts breakfast right on the beachfront, where the promenade supplies more entertainment than scrolling through your phone ever will.

Order coffee, settle in, and watch the early walkers and runners go past. Their exercise programme is their business. Yours can begin after breakfast.

Where: Snell Parade, Durban beachfront.

Get a little perspective at KwaMuhle Museum

From the beachfront, head into the city centre for a stop at KwaMuhle Museum. Housed in the former Native Administration Department building, it examines the labour controls, segregation, and everyday lives that shaped Durban.

This is a place to give your attention, rather than tick a box. Understanding how people were allowed to live and move through the city changes the way you see the streets outside.

Where: 130 Bram Fischer Road, Durban.

Plan your visit: Go on a weekday for this itinerary. The museum closes earlier on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Trade four wheels for two on the promenade

Head back towards Addington Beach and hire a bicycle from Xpression on the Beach. A ride along the promenade gives you sea air, people-watching, and the satisfaction of having earned lunch, however generously you choose to interpret that.

Take an easy ride rather than attempting a personal best. The point is to enjoy the beachfront, with enough time to stop and look around.

Where: 17 Erskine Terrace, Addington Beach.

Good to know: Bring a valid ID or driver’s licence for the rental deposit. Check current hire rates with Xpression.

Make lunch a bunny chow at Kebabish

Now head to Florida Road, where Kebabish serves a mutton bunny chow that fits this day plan rather neatly. Curry, bread and a proper sit-down before the afternoon gets going.

There is no elegant way to work through a bunny, and trying too hard rather misses the point. Tear off the bread, get into the curry and give the gravy-soaked bottom the attention it deserves.

Kebabish also lists chicken, bean and vegetable bunny options. Order for the appetite you actually have, remembering that dinner is still coming.

Where: 49 Florida Road, Durban.

Take the afternoon down a gear at Durban Botanic Gardens

After lunch, swap the restaurant strip for the paths and trees of Durban Botanic Gardens. Established in 1849, Africa’s oldest surviving botanic garden makes a good case for leaving part of the afternoon unplanned.

Wander, find a spot to sit and let lunch settle. Nobody needs to turn this into another exercise session.

Where: 9A John Zikhali Road, Musgrave.

Plan your visit: The published summer closing time is 17:45. Make this an afternoon stop rather than saving it for after dark.

Catch the evening light on the beachfront

Before dinner, return to the promenade for a final stretch by the water. Durban faces east, so the sun will not sink into the sea, but the changing light, skyline, and ocean still give you a good reason to linger.

This is your breathing space between the afternoon and whatever the evening has in store. A short walk will do. You have already earned the right to sit down again.

Finish at Dukkah on Florida Road

For dinner, head to Dukkah, where the menu takes its cues from the eastern coastline of Africa and the restaurant shares its address with a cocktail bar and lounge.

Book a table, order something that catches your eye, and let dinner take its time. After a day of moving between stops, staying put becomes rather appealing.

Where: 59 Florida Road, Durban.

And there you have it: a Durban day with history, sea air and very little chance of going hungry. The Fugitive might struggle to stick around for all of it. You have no such problem.
