Located at Tinley Manor on the Dolphin Coast and just a 30-minute drive from King Shaka International Airport, South Africa's first all-inclusive resort, Club Med South Africa Beach Resort offers the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. 

As someone unfamiliar with KwaZulu-Natal beyond its well-known attractions, I couldn’t help but wonder: why did Club Med choose this city for its South African debut? The answer became clear almost immediately upon arriving at the resort: KwaZulu-Natal blends breathtaking landscapes, tropical forests, and savannah with the Indian Ocean, creating an Eden befitting a luxury resort. 

 The entrance offers an immediate taste of the grandeur and warmth that awaits at Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari, and I knew from the moment I stepped inside that I would find it rather difficult to leave.

Why stay at Club Med South Africa Beach Resort? 

Having never experienced Club Med before, I was curious to see what the all-inclusive experience was really like. As no stranger to the brand, I knew that it offered the ultimate resort-life experience, and it did not disappoint. 

First things first, the all-inclusive offering: this means that no bills are to be paid, so hold off on pulling out your wallet during your stay, and while yes, it did feel strange to dine to my heart's content from an endless options buffet (which was both exhilarating and overwhelming because where do I even start), it also meant experiencing a wide range of activities that I would not be able to do access easily at home. 

Consider this a spoiler to their archery offering; more on that and all the other range of activities below. Club Med is true to its comprehensive offering. 

As South Africa's second largest hotel project in history, the property is expansive, covering a 32-hectare oceanfront site. Construction of the resort kicked off in 2024, with 72 buildings built with a focus on topography to create an immersive experience in each location while simultaneously blending the signature Club Med experience with its surroundings. 

Careful consideration of the surrounding environment and nature is at the helm of Club Med South Africa Beach Resort. A reported 4000 indigenous trees have been replanted, contributing to the restoration of the coastal forest habitat. And this thread of sustainability is woven into each facet of the resort, with 1775 solar panels installed, efforts to ensure a smaller carbon footprint, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater treatment.

Beyond the luxury and island-feel escape, it is the service at Club Med South Africa Beach Resort that really leaves an impression; it is attentive without an overbearing nature, with staff anticipating your every need with a warmth that makes it feel as if you are chatting to a friend. 

The resort embodies a relaxed yet luxurious look and feel throughout its interiors, paying homage to the location and diverse cultural traditions that make KwaZulu-Natal a vibrant hub. Each area, from the reception to the main dining room and the individual guest rooms, has been designed with intention to echo luxury, refinement, and that South African flair we all know and love. 

What are the rooms like? 

The expansive estate, which arguably does require a ride of 3 on the on-site golf carts, unless you want to get your steps in, is home to a total of 411 rooms. The rooms are split into 3 categories: superior, deluxe, and suites. 

I had the pleasure of setting up 'home base' in the superior room, fitted for two; it offers ocean views that will have you asking if this is straight out of a Pinterest board. The interiors of the room nod to South African design, with accents of blues and oranges on pillows scattered throughout. Each Superior room features a balcony, and as I pulled away the curtains to unveil the view, my breath was taken away by an astounding view of the ocean and the resort, which remains quiet enough to hear the distant roll of the ocean waves. 

Notably, the toilet is separate from the main bathroom, so if you intend to stay with a friend or your partner, there won't be any awkward 'hurry up and get out of the shower, I need the loo ' moments. The main bathroom features a larger shower, and yes, before you ask, the water pressure was perfection. 

Amenities included in the bathroom were a range of soaps and lotions, alongside an eco-gestures message that encourages guests to turn off the lights when not in use, and more, reaffirming the resort's commitment to sustainability. 

The Superior rooms offer a two-way door to the next room, meaning that if you opt in to travel with friends or family, you can share spaces next to one another. 

The resort envelops you in a feeling of luxury that, regardless of the room you choose, makes you feel as though you have stepped into your own little escape from the outside world.

If you want to go all out, the exclusive collection area of the resort, aptly titled Ilanga, which means sun in Zulu, features 66 suites designed in style, with a beachfront villa, which does include a more personalised experience with breakfast in your room, access to a private swimming pool, and the like. 

What is the service like? 

One of the biggest takeaways from my experience at Club Med South Africa Beach Resort was the warmth of all the team members. Each one exuded a joy and warmth that felt tangible, and sent the message to all guests that they really do enjoy their jobs. 

It was consistently sincere, and while there were moments that I had to utilise my 7 years of French learning- shout-out to past Ishani for opting for French studies- it was a reminder of how global Club Med is as a concept. With employees from a range of countries, the majority from South Africa, the true South African hospitality is a thread that can be found from the chefs serving up your hot breakfast to the encouragement found when you face your fear of heights and opt into doing the trapeze activity. 

While other luxury resorts may adopt a rather stiff and overly polished approach to service, Club Med offers a warmth that encourages integration and interactions between the staff and guests, dining in the same areas and prompting conversations about all sorts, from life to what your favourite dish of the evening at the buffet was. 

What are the food and drinks like? 

Club Med South Africa Beach Resort is home to two restaurants. Oceania, the resort's main restaurant, located in the main building, offers endless views of the Indian Ocean with its outdoor dining and has been themed to all things oceanic, with dining tables built in the shape of a whale and interiors fitted to the ceiling, including a sheer material that hangs and mimics the movements of the ocean in a blue hue that entrances you with one gaze. 

The main restaurant offers buffet-style service and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The options are endless but considered, with KwaZulu-Natal's diverse cuisine spotlighted throughout each setting, from bunny-loafs to amagwinya, and even a butter paneer curry that has me convinced an Indian aunty or uncle is at the back of the kitchen creating a whirlwind storm of authentic South African Indian cuisine. I have to admit that I felt like a kid in a candy store, with so many options of what to eat; as a vegetarian, I was in foodie bliss. 

Catering to all its guests from various parts of the world, the buffet also features East Asian cuisine, including Congee, a savoury, comforting rice porridge synonymous with East asian cuisine, offering guests a culinary trip around the world. 

The second restaurant, Nguni Gourmet Club, can be found across from the adults-only zen pool, with a terrace setting that ushers in the tropical landscapes with panoramic views. This restaurant is open all day, whereas the Oceania restaurant offers service in dedicated time slots, and while the menu may be small with an a la carte approach, it focuses on braai flavours and cooking methods. Options include peri-peri chicken served with sweet potato fries and coleslaw alongside a Wagyu Burger, which appeared to be a household favourite of diners.

The only drawback here for me as a vegetarian was the lack of options, with a single dish available, but after enquiring with the waiter, I was promptly offered an alternative, indicating their flexibility to different dietary requirements. 

With five bars to choose from, there is no shortage of options when it comes to grabbing a well-made cocktail, or, if you are like me, a mocktail or three. The resort’s main bar, aptly named Injabulo, meaning “joy” in Zulu, drew me in at first glance. Designed in homage to Zulu culture, the bar’s centrepiece is the striking feature above the counter, modelled on a traditional headdress worn by women from KwaZulu-Natal.

Other bars can be found in the Nguni Gourmet Club, the Dune Beach Bar, the EC Lounge Bar and the Family Pool Bar. 

Time Out Insider Info: The Dune Beach Bar, located above the surf school, features a concise menu where you can grab a light bite to eat, including vibrant poké bowls. 

What activities are available?

The resort is a playground for absolute family fun, with a range of bespoke activities including a Club Med first, the surf school, which offers lessons from individuals as young as 4, beginners and expert surfers. Sessions are led by instructors, with beginner and intermediate courses on offer, alongside all the tools that you need to hit the waves, including wetsuits, a surfboard and the like. 

Other key highlights at the resort include the flying trapeze, a chance to swing back and forth and embrace the freedom of what some might think is tumbling down to your demise. Fear not; even if you are scared of heights, you are strapped in by the expert team and guided throughout the experience. If you'd rather opt for a more relaxing activity, the resort features a freshwater lake at the edge of the property where kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are on offer. 

With wide eyes as I gazed upon all that was on offer, I opted to experience the kayaking, flying trapeze, and archery. The archery lessons are led by experts who walk you through everything from your stance and how to hold the bow to finding the right angle, before letting you channel your inner Katniss Everdeen. And, honestly, I fully embraced it. To say I was sad when it was time to leave would be an understatement.

At each point of the activities, the staff was welcoming, informative, and most importantly, encouraging. If padel is the name of your game, the resort not only offers that but also table tennis, tennis and more, alongside beach volleyball and yoga. 

An on-site kitted gym features all the necessities, including treadmills, a weight section, and all the necessary bells and whistles. While many of the activities are outdoors, on days when 

the weather turns south and a downpour happens, Club Med creates a rainy-day itinerary. This can include activities such as bracelet making, board games, indoor Zumba, dance lessons, and more. 

If unwinding is in your main agenda, or you opt to have a slower, less adrenaline-filled stay, the Club Med spa offers a range of treatments including massages, body wraps, pedicures, and a nearby Turkish hammam to sweat away all your worries. It is important to note that the spa offering is not included in the all-inclusive package and must be pre-booked. 

And if that is not enough, the property features four heated pools, with the main pool, family pool, adults-only zen pool, and the Ilanga exclusive collection pool. 

What is available nearby? 

For those who opt to head out of the resort, I mean, in my humble opinion, why would you when everything you need is at your fingertips? The resort does offer excursions to popular destinations, including visiting  Zulu villages and communities, a local cookery class, and more.

For those seeking a hole-in-one, the hotel is able to recommend nearby golf courses to practise and perfect your swing. 

Why should you book a stay at Club Med South Africa Beach? 

Club Med South Africa Beach Resort is an oasis, and the pictures that you have seen online and perhaps even while scrolling on socials do not do it justice. 

What really sets Club Med South Africa apart is its all-inclusive offering. It is a one-stop destination designed with everyone in mind, from families and couples to solo travellers, with enough on offer to make each stay feel entirely your own.

With views and a setting that might have you saying out loud, 'Is this AI or is this real life? ', I am here to report that Club Med South Africa is everything and more. 

The luxury resort has truly set the bar for me, so much so that I might not want to head to any other resort unless it's all-inclusive. I can admit that I stared back at the resort as the airport transfer pulled away, like someone saying goodbye to a long-lost lover they were not quite ready to leave behind.
