Modern university-based gallery showcasing contemporary British and international artists with a few minor concessions to older artforms
Nestled in the rear corner of the University of Edinburgh’s Old College quad, the main space occupied by the Talbot Rice Gallery can come as something of a surprise once you find your way in: the White Gallery is an airy and modern atrium-cum-hangar completely out of keeping with the grand old architectural style of the exterior. It’s a style that perfectly suits the Talbot Rice remit: a changing selection of solo, retrospective and thematically-linked exhibitions highlighting the work of British and international contemporary artists.
The neo-classical Georgian Gallery off to one side offers a small concession to more traditional artforms – while the main floor space adopts the spirit of whatever’s going on in the larger room, the upper balcony holds a permanent exhibition of the University’s Torrie Collection, a selection of mostly 17th century Dutch works.
