A long-standing venue on the eastern fringes of the New Town, the Magnum seems to exist outside time. The interior is unobtrusive while the menu brings mains like seared pheasant breast, roasted leg, mash, roast shallot and oregano velouté – or chargrilled côte de boeuf, potato dauphinoise, asparagus and black truffle butter. Two course set lunch, £12.95; decent bar menu too.
