Edinburgh’s the star in new Britain on Film season

Iconic films made in Edinburgh and LGBT shorts are to be screened in the city as part of the BFI’s Britain on Film project, a three-year celebration which aims to open up Britain’s film and TV archives to the public.

The project aims to bring Scotland’s film heritage to life with a variety of events taking place across the country.

In Edinburgh, the programme starts with an evening of shorts about LGBT life in the city from the archives of the BBC and ITV. Vintage LGBT Edinburgh takes place on October 23 and has been created in associated with the Scottish Queer International Film Festival and LGBT Health & Wellbeing

Glad to be Gay’, a 1976 public access film from the Scottish Minorities Group will be screened alongside 1983 TV documentary ‘Coming Out’, which focuses on Scottish society’s attitude to homosexuality. The free event will also include a surprise screening and a guest speaker.

This will be followed by the Made in Edinburgh season celebrating the city’s big screen history with the showing of four classic films shot in the city.

Shallow Grave’, ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘The Acid House’ (1998) will be screened on three consecutive Saturdays at Destiny Church from November 14, while ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ (1969) will be shown at Out of the Blue Drill Hall on Friday November 20. Booking and ticket places are still TBC but will be available from the Britain on Film website.
