The best Edinburgh clubs this week

Maybe everyone’s on holiday this week or maybe they’re scared of Friday the 13th, but the usual big-name nights are all taking a break for seven days. Time, then, to check out Sneaky Pete’s, still going strong with a brilliantly-sourced selection of visiting young DJs, and the irregular incursion of travelling circus Cirque du Soul.

Cirque du Soul with Artful Dodger – Liquid Room, Thu Mar 12
Non genre-specific travelling club circus Cirque du Soul returns for its second irregular outing in Edinburgh. Expect an odd but vivid combination of wild set decoration, circus-themed dress-up antics with a burlesque edge and, er, classic UK garage sounds from the night’s special headline guest Artful Dodger (pictured above). Discoverers of Craig David with ‘Re-Rewind’ (yeah, we know) and a multiple chart success under their own steam at the turn of the millennium, original members Mark Hill and Pete Devereaux have been supplanted by Hill’s replacement Dave Low and long-serving MC Alistair.

In Deep with Wolf Music DJs – Sneaky Pete’s, Fri Mar 13
Dwelling on that sweet spot where disco and house meet to create a joyous sound utterly suited to darkened basements and packed dancefloors, London’s Wolf Music (the label) has played host to a variety of fiercely contemporary artists including Medlar, Red Rack ‘Em, Homework, Waze & Odyssey and many more. This week Sneaky Pete’s exemplary rotating residents’ night In Deep will welcome Wolf Music (the DJ duo, label founders Matt Neale and Stu Clarke) for a set which shows off the very best of their label and more besides.

Teesh with Glowing Palms – Sneaky Pete’s Sat Mar 14
There isn’t much information available about London’s Glowing Palms online, given the early stage his career’s at, but have a hunt about (or even better, look immediately below this paragraph), and you’ll find a Boiler Room set which is refreshingly unlike anything else out there. A soft collision of soul groovin’ ‘80s synths, drum machine snaps, yacht rock riffs and disco choruses, it introduces him as the Magnum PI of dance music. If you want to hear more, check out his Resonance FM show or his two EPs so far on the Ruf Kutz label.
