The best Edinburgh clubs this week

Get ready for a busy weekend as Nightvision are back with a pair of very different bangs this week, namely Lithuania’s top electronic musician and one of the fathers of UK drum ‘n’ bass. Elsewhere there’s a decidedly healthy pairing of two of Britain’s best club brands, fresh from DJ magazine award success.

Nightvision presents 18 Years of Roni Size – La Belle Angele, Fri Mar 20
Slipping on the hat worn by Xplicit (the long-running Edinburgh club which merged with Musika to form Nightvision) for a night, British bass monarchy arrives in Edinburgh in the form of Bristol’s Roni Size. In 1997 he was the man who crashed drum ‘n’ bass into the mainstream with ‘New Forms’, his debut album with D’n’B crew Reprazent, and while the form has mutated into broader bass culture he’s continued to record, release and, er, represent under his own name, briefly as Breakbeat Era and with the reformed Reprazent for nearly two decades.

Digital Groove: Best of British – La Belle Angele, Sat Mar 21
Yes, we know it sounds like a food-related BBC talent contest or some form of 20th century military re-enactment held on an airstrip somewhere in Wiltshire, but bear with us, because promoters Digital Groove have jumped on the back of DJ magazine’s 2014 edition of their Best of British awards to pair two of the acknowledged finest UK talents in operation right now. We can vouch for one of them, because in the blue corner, representing Glasgow’s long-running and still indefatigable house and techno night Subculture (Best Club Event), it’s co-resident Domenic Cappello - while across in the red corner Mancunian stalwart Krysko (pictured above) of the Warehouse Project (Best Event Series) is coming to town.

Nightvision with Ten Walls – Liquid Room, Sat Mar 21
The dramatic, brassy house of last year’s Ibiza anthem and UK top ten hit ‘Walking with Elephants’ is a big favourite of the Nightvision crew, and now they’ve brought its creator Ten Walls to Edinburgh for a very special date. Lithuanian Marijus Adomaitis grew up as a musician steeped in classical training, and his own bassoon playing often figures in his dense, noirish tracks. Also listen out for the earlier tracks ‘Gotham’ on Dixon and Ame’s Innervisions label and ‘Requiem’ on Life and Death, and prepare to enjoy one of house music’s most unique sounds of the moment. Support comes from local boy done good on Moda Black Theo Kottis.
